2005 Steele DuPratt Vineyard Mendocino Ridge Chardonnay ($24)

What sold us: As Jess Jackson's onetime winemaker and legal pincushion, Jed Steele knows what Americans want in a Chardonnay. (Well enough for Jackson to sue Steele over alleged winemaking "secrets" -- and win.) Steele's effort from this late-ripening 1,200-foot-elevation Mendocino vineyard matches a slightly toasty, tropical nose, with a fresh, crisp taste profile. The toasty flavors are subtle and the acidity high. Still plenty of oak, but in a style to please all sides in the Chard Wars. Is this the new, new Chardonnay?

From the San Francisco Chronicle

Wine Enthusiasts gives Steele 2002 Goodchild Pinot 92 points in its October issue--Pours dark and glyceriney, and opens up with vibrant, spicy aromas of roasted coffee, black cherry, smoked meat and cinnamon. This is a big tough wine, tannic and chuncky, but lush and creamy on the palate. Calls for extended againg try 2008 and beyond.

Steele Wines was highly praised in a recent edition of the Wine Spectator, naming Steele Wines as one of "50 great producers every wine lover should know." Steele was only one of eight California wineries named.

"People expect value. It's not that I envision making wines for the masses, but I've always felt wines should be reasonably priced." Jed Steele quoted in the Wine Spectator
